The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) is demanding a 50% increase in base pay ahead of upcoming negotiations with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

The union says the sharp rise in the cost of living, utility tariffs, and fuel prices has reduced the real value of workers’ salaries, making it difficult for public sector employees to cope.

TEWU argues that only a significant pay increase will help restore fairness and protect workers from current economic hardships.

Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has acknowledged the union’s concerns and assured that government will review the proposal in line with its fiscal capacity during the ongoing negotiations.
