A tragic mining accident at Twifo-Mampong in the Twifo Atti-Mokwa District has claimed three lives, with four others rescued after being trapped in an abandoned galamsey pit.

According to local reports, the victims, believed to be young men from the community, had illegally entered the site, which had been dormant for nearly five years following the closure of a Chinese-owned mining company.

District Chief Executive (DCE), Isaac Yawson, confirmed the incident in an interview with Adom News. He disclosed that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Twifo Praso morgue for autopsy and further investigation.

Mr. Yawson explained that the incident occurred on a Wednesday, a day locally regarded as sacred, when farming, mining, and other activities in the forest are traditionally prohibited. Preliminary findings suggest that several youths in the area engage in illegal mining at night despite the dangers.

“The chief has assured me that anyone caught engaging in such activities at night will be arrested,” the DCE warned, calling for community cooperation to prevent further tragedies.
