The Edo State Police Command has taken a 24-year-old TikTok content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen, before the court over claims that she orchestrated her own “kidnapping” in an attempt to grow her social media following.
Police reports indicate that Omoyemen posted a video suggesting she had been abducted along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City. The video further alleged that she was later “rescued” by officers who supposedly held her at the Akpata Police Station and demanded a ₦10,000 bail payment.
The viral clip, which featured a voice prompting viewers to follow her TikTok page, quickly drew attention online. However, after reviewing the footage, investigators concluded that the entire scenario had been staged. According to the police, the suspect confessed during interrogation that the drama was created purely to increase engagement on her account.
Police spokesperson Chidi Nwabuzor explained that the video was deceptive and capable of sparking unnecessary distrust toward law enforcement, as well as stirring tension among residents.
He also revealed that the suspect had earlier removed another version of the video, which clearly showed someone behind the camera urging viewers to follow her page, a detail that further exposed the intention behind the hoax.
Omoyemen has now been arrested and formally charged, while the police continue efforts to track down the individuals who assisted in the staged incident so they can also face legal consequences.
The command used the opportunity to caution the public against producing or circulating false information, stressing that such actions threaten peace and security within the state.
