President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced sweeping changes to Nigeria’s military leadership in a bid to reinvigorate the country’s security apparatus amid growing unrest across several regions.

The presidency confirmed on Friday that the shake-up affects the highest levels of the armed forces, with new chiefs appointed to lead the army, navy, and air force.

Under the new arrangement, General Olufemi Oluyede assumes office as the Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa, who served in the role for a little over two years.
Major-General W. Shaibu has been appointed Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas takes over as Chief of Naval Staff.
Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye will continue as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

A statement from the presidency said all appointments take immediate effect.

The reshuffle comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with multiple security threats, including Islamist insurgencies in the northeast, armed banditry in the northwest, and separatist agitations in the southeast.

President Tinubu’s administration has faced mounting pressure to deliver results in curbing violence, which has disrupted livelihoods, displaced communities, and strained the nation’s resources.

Observers say the new appointments reflect Tinubu’s determination to inject fresh energy into the military command structure as part of his broader strategy to stabilize Africa’s most populous nation.
