A routine offloading operation at the Golden Jubilee Terminal of the Tema Port turned tragic on Friday when a young importer was fatally crushed by a container-handling machine.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when a reach stacker, a heavy-duty vehicle used to lift and move shipping containers, was reversing as part of routine port operations. The victim, who was reportedly standing behind the machine at the time, was struck and trapped beneath its massive tyres.
Efforts by workers and bystanders to rescue him proved futile due to the severe nature of his injuries.
“It all happened so fast. We saw the stacker moving back, and before anyone could shout, he was already down,” one eyewitness recounted, visibly shaken.
Emergency teams and port authorities swiftly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and recover the body. Operations at the terminal were temporarily halted as officials began investigations into the incident.
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is expected to release an official statement and begin a safety review to prevent future occurrences.
The deceased’s identity has not yet been disclosed, pending notification of his family.
