US President Donald Trump has renewed his threat to impose a 100% tariff on all films produced outside the United States, claiming America’s movie industry has been “stolen” by other countries.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said California had been particularly hard hit and the levy would “solve this long time, never ending problem.” He did not specify when the measure would take effect or whether it would apply to streaming platforms like Netflix.

Analysts questioned how such tariffs would work, noting that films often involve international funding, actors, or production locations. Dan Coatsworth of AJ Bell warned that higher costs could be passed on to consumers, affecting streaming services and cinemas.

Recent US studio blockbusters such as Deadpool & Wolverine, Wicked, and Gladiator II were filmed abroad, reflecting a wider industry trend toward countries offering tax incentives.

Despite the threats, investors have shown little concern, with shares in companies like Netflix and Disney dipping briefly before rebounding.
