The Vice President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Bernard Tutu Boahene, has accused the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of abandoning organised labour during talks with the government on illegal mining.
Dr. Boahene said UTAG had joined TUC and other unions to pressure the government to act on the galamsey menace and its effects on water bodies. However, he claimed TUC later withdrew from the collective strike, leaving UTAG to continue alone.
“We felt betrayed by TUC leadership,” he said. “We joined forces for greater impact, but when TUC called off their strike, UTAG had to continue ours.”
He added that UTAG went through its internal procedures before deciding to distance itself from TUC’s decision.
The incident, he noted, reflects growing cracks within organised labour on how to deal with the government over workers’ welfare and wider national issues like illegal mining.
