The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has given government until September 30, 2025, to clear 12 months of unpaid salaries owed to members of the Railway Workers Union of Ghana or face a nationwide strike.

TUC General Secretary, Joshua Ansah, issued the ultimatum on Wednesday, lamenting that the prolonged delay has plunged railway workers and their families into severe financial hardship.

“We have sent a notice to the government and the owner of the company that if by September 30 the 12-month outstanding salaries owed to our affiliate are not paid, TUC will embark on a nationwide strike,” he warned.

Mr Ansah said repeated appeals to the Ministry of Transport and other government agencies have yielded no concrete action. He revealed that while government previously covered 70% of railway workers’ salaries, the support has since been cut, leaving staff in dire straits.

The TUC also called on government to suspend the planned October 1, 2025 commissioning of the Tema–Mpakadan Railway line by the Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, arguing that even operators of the line are unaware of the scheduled launch.

The ultimatum reinforces an earlier notice by the Railway Workers Union to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of its intention to strike and picket peacefully on September 30.

The union said government’s failure to pay salaries since October 2024 has made it impossible for workers to sustain themselves and their families.

Reaffirming its solidarity, the TUC stressed that it has a historic duty to railway workers, noting that the Congress itself was founded on railway land.
