Residents of Awutu Mampong in the Awutu Senya West District were thrown into shock after the death of a 19-year-old commercial motorbike rider, Kofi Mensah, who was allegedly attacked during a late-evening trip.
Kofi, who had recently completed Senior High School and was riding commercially to save money for his future education, reportedly picked up two passengers who hired him for a journey from Awutu Mampong to Agona Mankrong.
According to community sources, the trip was interrupted when the passengers asked him to stop briefly. It was during this pause that the men allegedly attempted to seize the motorbike. Kofi is said to have pleaded with them, offering his phone and the money he had made that day, explaining that the bike was not his personal property but one he was still paying off.
Moments later, Kofi was found lifeless along the roadside by a fellow rider who quickly alerted other Okada operators in the area. A search team was formed, and the two men believed to have been involved in the incident were tracked down at Agona Osedu.
Assemblyman for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, Ishmael Odoom, confirmed that news of Kofi’s death deeply angered residents and other riders. Before authorities could intervene, the crowd confronted the suspects, leading to their deaths.
Police later transported all three bodies to the Agona Swedru Police Hospital as investigations continue.
Assemblyman Odoom has urged Okada riders to be extra vigilant when taking passengers, especially at night, to avoid similar tragic situations.
