An Accra court has handed down prison terms to two individuals for illegally dumping refuse at the Accra Post Office, while a third suspect has been remanded as the case continues.

Albert Okai and Amoako Darko were each sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour after failing to pay a fine equivalent to 50 penalty units (GH¢600) imposed by the court. The duo is to serve their sentences at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The third accused, Michael Osei, entered a plea of not guilty and has been remanded in custody for one week pending further court proceedings.

Accra’s Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, described the convictions as part of the city’s intensified efforts to enforce sanitation laws and curb indiscriminate dumping. He stated that the case sends a clear message to would-be offenders about the consequences of violating the assembly’s by-laws.

This legal action is expected to contribute to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s broader campaign against environmental violations and promote public health through stricter enforcement of sanitation statutes.
