The run-up to the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) student elections has been marked by controversy, following the disqualification and later reinstatement of presidential aspirant Stephen Zoure.
Mr. Zoure, initially ruled out of the race after the vetting process, has since been cleared on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 to contest on Friday, September 19, 2025. His return has sparked debate among students, with many questioning the reasons behind his earlier disqualification.
Allegations of Unfair Treatment
Some students and observers have suggested that the decision to disqualify Zoure may have been influenced by internal politics. According to this perception, the move was seen as an attempt to sideline one of the strongest contenders, potentially to the advantage of other aspirants.
While no official evidence has been presented to confirm these claims, the timing of his reinstatement, just days before the elections, has fuelled concerns about fairness and transparency in the process.
Impact on Campaign
The delay in his reinstatement is also believed to have affected Zoure’s campaign momentum. With less time to engage the student body compared to his competitors, he faces an uphill battle to re-establish his visibility and reach before polling day.
Despite these challenges, many of his supporters remain optimistic, urging the wider student population to look beyond the controversy and focus on leadership qualities, competence, and integrity when casting their votes.
Call for Fair Elections
The situation has intensified interest in this year’s elections, with the presidential race now viewed as one of the most competitive in recent memory. Student leaders and election officials have called for calm, encouraging the UEW community to allow the democratic process to prevail.
As one student put it, “What matters now is that the students of UEW make the right choice on Friday, September 19, 2025, regardless of the setbacks or controversies leading up to this election.
