Winneba, Sept. 25, 2025
The Department of Strategic Communication at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held a Testicular Health Awareness Seminar under the theme “Don’t Wait; Check Now.” The programme, which took place at the School of Communication and Media Studies Seminar Room (South Campus), sought to raise awareness about men’s health and encourage early detection of testicular conditions.
The event opened with a prayer led by Sr. Joan Tore, followed by a welcome address from Prof. Mavis Amo-Mensah, Head of the Department of Strategic Communication. She emphasized the importance of integrating health education into communication studies, noting that awareness campaigns are vital in breaking stigmas around sensitive health issues.
Chairing the seminar was Prof. Albert Wornyo, Dean of the School of Communication and Media Studies (SCMS). In his remarks, he urged students and staff to take the message of health awareness seriously, adding that good health is essential for academic and professional success.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. John Kanyiri Yambah, Director of Health Services at UEW. In his presentation, Dr. Yambah dismissed several myths and stereotypes surrounding the testicles and offered practical guidance on proper care and handling. He encouraged regular self-examination as a simple but effective way to detect abnormalities early.
“Testicular health should not be treated as a taboo subject. Regular checks can save lives, and young men especially must take responsibility for their health,” Dr. Yambah stressed.
The session also included an interactive discussion and Q&A, where students and staff asked questions and shared concerns about men’s health.
Closing remarks were given by the Dean, Prof. Wornyo, followed by a vote of thanks from Charles Baah-Aboagye. The programme ended with a prayer by Mr. Mohammed Kayaba, after which participants engaged in informal networking and photo sessions.
Moderated by Ms. Gloria Manu and Mr. Evans Boahen, the seminar successfully combined education, health services, and advocacy, reinforcing UEW’s commitment to the holistic well-being of its students.
