Political activist Comrade Umar Harris has launched a scathing criticism of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the party of hypocrisy and deception over the failed construction of the National Cathedral, which he described as a betrayal of both public trust and religious sentiment.

Speaking in an interview, Umar Harris said Ghana has lost enormous sums of money through corruption, stressing that even officially reported figures represent only a fraction of the true scale of losses.

“Ghana has lost a lot of money through corruption,” he said. “And even what is published are only the cases that were detected. Just imagine the ones that were never detected.”

He singled out the National Cathedral project as a prime example of wasteful expenditure, expressing frustration over the estimated US$100 million spent on what he described as an abandoned and unproductive project.

“They spent about 100 million dollars on that useless hole they call the National Cathedral,” he stated. “I become sad anytime I remember it.”

Comrade Harris accused the NPP of exploiting religious sentiments for political gain, bluntly claiming the party had “scammed God” by failing to deliver on its lofty promises surrounding the project.

He also defended the effectiveness of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), dismissing claims that the initiative lacks impact.

“If anyone doubts the efficiency of ORAL, they should go and ask Chairman Wontumi, Hannan of the Buffer Stock Company, or Gifty Oware of the National Service Scheme,” he said, citing them as examples of individuals affected by the recovery process.

According to him, the primary objective of ORAL is not punitive but corrective.

“The aim is to recover the stolen money, not to imprison people,” he explained.

He further assured the public that any funds recovered through the operation would be managed transparently and used responsibly.

“No money recovered will be ill-spent,” he said. “There will be transparency.”

Umar Harris revealed that several individuals implicated in alleged financial improprieties have already appealed for leniency and have been granted time to refund the monies involved.

“Most of the people have pleaded and have been given a period to make their payments,” he added.
