A lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Citizenship, Elections and Security (CenCES), Dr. Kwabena Bomfeh Jr., has cautioned against what he describes as performative approaches to party unity, arguing that genuine peace can only be achieved through humility and sincere commitment.

Speaking on Newsfile hosted by Samson Lardy Anyenini on Saturday, January 24, 2026, during discussions on the NPP race, peace pact, and related fears, Dr. Bomfeh Jr. warned that aggressive posturing and political showmanship cannot foster lasting unity. “If we give the perverted view that unity comes through aggression or showmanship, it will not work,” he said. “Unity only comes when we are humble and show humility, when we are willing to descend.”

He stressed that the call for peace should not be limited to one political party, noting that Ghana as a nation is in need of reconciliation. “We need to accept that it is not only the NPP that needs peace; the entire country needs peace,” he stated.

Reflecting on Ghana’s post-independence history, Dr. BomfehJr. observed that national divisions have persisted around critical issues of state-building. “Right from independence, we have been divided on most of the essential things needed to build the nation,” he said. While acknowledging that consensus does not mean uniformity of thought, he explained that unity requires agreement on fundamental national priorities. “We may not have one mind, but being in one mind means agreeing on what is essential to the nation,” he noted.

According to him, disunity is often fuelled by deliberate falsehoods and intolerance. “One thing we must do is to avoid the triggers of disunity, and key among them are lies and hatred,” he said. “These two work together to overthrow and kill the truth, and if we clear them out, we can achieve unity.”

Turning specifically to the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Bomfeh Jr. said the responsibility now lies with party leadership and aspirants to demonstrate sincerity beyond rhetoric. “The NPP, as a political party, knows what is good for itself. The most important thing now is for them to walk the talk,” he concluded.
