The Deputy Director of Operations of the United Party (UP), Afia Korankyewaa, has urged the government to reduce the number of chicks allocated per beneficiary under the “NkokoNketenkete” programme from fifty (50) to twenty (20).
Miss Korankyewaa explained that lowering the number of chicks per person would increase the number of Ghanaians who can benefit from the initiative while encouraging greater commitment from participants.
“Reducing the number of chicks from 50 to 20 per person will ensure beneficiaries take the programme seriously and remain committed,” she said.
Under the first phase of the programme, each participant currently receives 50 chicks, feed support, and technical guidance to ensure the survival and sustainability of their poultry project. The programme aims not only to reduce unemployment but also to curb Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported frozen chicken.
The outspoken politician also emphasized the need to protect the initiative from potential saboteurs. She proposed implementing a strict monitoring and evaluation framework to safeguard the programme’s objectives.
The initiative plans to distribute over three million poultry birds nationwide. It seeks to make poultry farming accessible and affordable for all Ghanaians, in homes, schools, and communities. Beneficiaries will receive birds, feed, and other essential supplies to start their poultry businesses.
