Cape Coast / Accra, September 23, 2025 — The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast (UCC) chapter has given the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) a strict 48-hour ultimatum to revoke its sanctions against UCC which include suspending government support and labelling the university “non-existent” on GTEC’s portal.

The ultimatum, delivered by UTAG-UCC Secretary Dr. Isaac Boabeng, comes in response to GTEC’s decision, announced on September 22, to suspend all government-related support and services to UCC. GTEC said the action was necessary because UCC failed to comply with directives regarding the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.

Dr. Boabeng condemned the commission’s move as “unlawful, unjustifiable, and a direct attack on the dignity and livelihood of the university staff.” He particularly criticised actions that could affect salary payments, labelling them reckless and even criminal.

He has demanded that GTEC withdraw the sanctions and issue a formal apology by Thursday or Friday. Failing that, he warned, UCC’s staff unions will mobilise protests, including a march to Accra.

GTEC’s sanctions reportedly include the freezing of programme accreditation, government salary subventions, GETFund disbursements, research and book allowances, post-retirement contract approvals, financial clearances for recruitment, and other administrative processes
