The UTAG National Vice President and senior lecturer at UEW Ebenezer Teye Amanor-Lartey, has urged the government to ban surface mining, warning it is destroying forests, rivers, and communities across Ghana.

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio, Amanor-Lartey described current efforts to curb illegal mining as ineffective. “How many people have been arrested? How many are in jail? People are mining by the roadside with impunity,” he said.

He stressed the urgent need for stronger action, including revoking licenses for small-scale miners who break environmental laws and imposing stricter penalties.

Ghana, a leading gold producer, continues to struggle with surface mining, which has caused deforestation and contaminated major rivers like the Pra, Offin, and Ankobra.

“This is an emergency situation. If a few arrests are made, it’s only a drop in the ocean. The major problems must be tackled,” Amanor-Lartey concluded.
