The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akyem AbuakwaSouth, Addo-Aikins Jnr, has revealed that several water treatment plants in the municipality have been shut down due to contamination caused by illegal mining activities (galamsey).
According to him, the galamsey operations have severely polluted local water bodies, making it impossible for the plants to operate effectively and provide clean water for residents.
Speaking in an interview on UTV, the MCE described the situation as alarming and called for urgent collective action to protect the municipality’s natural resources.
He disclosed that the Assembly has collaborated with the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) and NAIMOS, an environmental task force, to roll out practical measures aimed at curbing illegal mining and restoring affected lands and water bodies.
“There is no doubt that our lands are blessed with abundant natural resources,” Mr. Addo-Aikins Jnr stated, “but we will not allow illegal activities to destroy what God has given us. We are determined to fight galamsey to the very end.”
The MCE further urged community leaders, youth, and opinion leaders to support government efforts by reporting individuals or groups engaged in illegal mining.
He emphasized that the fight against galamsey is not only about protecting the environment but also about safeguarding the health, livelihood, and future of the people of Akyem Abuakwa South.
