Musician Wendy Shay has responded to viral claims suggesting she intentionally refused a traditional drink during her visit to the Weija Palace, clarifying that her actions were driven purely by health considerations.
The artiste had visited Nii Ayiokufoubuor I, Chief of Weija, to pay her respects ahead of her upcoming Shay Concert. During the ceremony, she was offered a drink as part of customary protocol. A short clip from the event circulated online shortly afterward, sparking claims that she had “snubbed” the gesture.
In a statement addressing the speculation, Wendy Shay explained that the drink given to her was alcoholic, contrary to assumptions that it was water. She added that she is currently on medication, making it unsafe for her to consume alcohol.
According to her, the decision was not an act of disrespect nor an attempt to disregard tradition.
“I hold our customs in high regard. I would never intentionally disrespect any traditional authority,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to ingest anything during the visit, and because I’m on medication, I couldn’t take an alcoholic drink. As a nurse, I’m aware of the risks of mixing alcohol with certain drugs.”
She urged the public to disregard misleading interpretations of the moment and expressed appreciation to fans who sought clarification before drawing conclusions.
