A new chapter has begun for Ghana football, and it starts with arrival, expectation, and urgency.
Veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has officially touched down in Accra, marking the beginning of his tenure as head coach of the Ghana national football team. His arrival on Wednesday evening sets the stage for his official unveiling on April 23 at the Alisa Hotel.
The atmosphere surrounding his appointment is anything but routine. Queiroz steps into the role on a short-term, four-month contract, following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a run of inconsistent performances that left fans frustrated and the team searching for direction.
But this is not just another coaching change; it is a calculated gamble.
Queiroz brings with him a wealth of global experience, having managed elite teams and national sides including Real Madrid CF, Manchester United F.C. (as assistant), Portugal, and Iran. His résumé is deeply rooted in World Cup campaigns, guiding Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010 and leading Iran in both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.
Now, Ghana is placing its World Cup hopes in his hands.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming, set to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, Queiroz has little time to settle. His immediate task is clear: stabilize the team, sharpen its competitive edge, and restore belief in a squad that has struggled to replicate past glories.
As part of formal protocol, the Ghana Football Association is expected to present him to Kofi Adams following his unveiling, signalling full institutional backing for his mission.
The real test, however, begins on the pitch.
Ghana’s preparations kick off with friendly clashes against Mexico and Wales in early June, fixtures that will offer the first glimpse into Queiroz’s tactical imprint. From there, the stakes escalate quickly. Drawn into a challenging Group L, the Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign against Panama before facing heavyweights England and Croatia.
It is a daunting path, but perhaps the kind Queiroz was brought in to navigate.
His appointment reflects more than a coaching change; it is a statement of intent. After disappointing exits in recent tournaments, Ghana is betting on experience, discipline, and strategic clarity to rewrite its World Cup story.
