Private legal practitioner Godlove Adjei Tenkorang has stated that failure to pay tithes does not amount to robbing God, disputing a widely held belief in many Christian circles.

Speaking on Angel FM, Kumasi, he grounded his argument in scripture, particularly the book of Deuteronomy.
“When we read Deuteronomy 14:24 to the end, it clearly shows what the tithe should be used for and why it is collected,” he said.

According to him, the biblical purpose of tithing is primarily social support rather than enriching religious leaders.
“The Bible makes it clear that tithing is meant to help the poor, not already rich people or men,” he added.

He emphasized that his position is not rooted in disbelief.
“We are not saying this because we are educated and do not believe in God; I absolutely believe in God,” he explained.

He further argued that churches have multiple avenues for raising funds aside from tithes.
“Aside from tithe, there are other appeals for funds in the church which are used to support its activities, ” he added.

However, he criticized some religious institutions for personalizing the practice.
“Most churches today are making this personal  and that is not how it is supposed to be,” he argued.

Rejecting the common narrative, he stated:
“That ideology that not paying tithe means you are stealing from God is a lie; you are not stealing from God.”

He also challenged the notion that tithing determines one’s spirituality.
“Serving God is about being good and showing love to your neighbour, not whether you pay tithe or not.”

Concluding, he suggested that the selective interpretation of scripture may be influencing current teachings.
“It is obvious some are avoiding certain scriptures, and that is why these claims persist.”
