The Ghana Water Company Limited has attributed the recent water shortages affecting parts of Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region to ongoing electricity challenges impacting production and distribution systems.

Speaking in a report monitored on the issue, an official identified as Pardi North explained that unstable electricity supply disrupted the company’s operations and reduced consistent water production.

“Our production was not consistent because we did not have stable electricity, so we had to operate intermittently, and that is what caused the shortages,” the official stated.

According to the company, water supply has now been restored to some affected communities, with efforts ongoing to ensure stable distribution across the region.

“We have restored water to some communities and are working hard to sustain supply and extend it to all areas that need water,” he added.

However, the company warned that continued electricity instability could reverse the gains made so far.

“All these challenges boil down to electricity stability. If there is another power crisis, we may return to the same water shortage situation again,” he cautioned.

The company stressed the critical dependence of water production systems on electricity-powered machinery and pumps.

“We know water is life, which is why we are doing everything possible to resolve the issue. But without electricity, our machines cannot function,” he explained.

Addressing concerns over alternative water sources such as boreholes, the company clarified that even those systems still rely heavily on electricity.

“People are asking why we are not investing in boreholes, but we already have some in certain communities. Even with those, the water must still be pumped and treated, so our operations still depend on electricity,”  he noted.

The official further disclosed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured the company that ongoing maintenance works are intended to strengthen the long-term power supply system.

“The Electricity Company has explained that the ongoing works, including transformer repairs, are being done for the long-term benefit of all of us,” the official said.

Despite the challenges, the company expressed optimism that the situation is gradually improving.

“The situation is much better now, and we are hopeful that all the issues will soon be resolved,” the official concluded.
